    Why is Early Learning Important?

Research has firmly established that investing in early learning yields powerful benefits for children, both in early elementary and as a cornerstone to their overall educational success. Yet it is not enough to provide quality education for a year or two in a child's early years.

At Seattle Public Schools our Early Learning vision is that all families and children have access to high-quality, culturally responsive, and inclusive learning experiences from preschool through fifth grade. Each child deserves instruction that meets their individual needs. Schools must promote social and emotional growth as well as physical, cognitive, and academic development to help students reach their full potential.

    Enrollment

    Jump Start

Get a Jump Start on kindergarten with our FREE transition program for new kindergarten students and their families. Held each August, this one-week program is similar to a day camp. Jump Start gives children a chance to get comfortable in their new school, meet staff and peers and explore the school campus so that they feel ready and confident when school starts in September.

WaKIDS  Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS) is a process of connecting the adults in a children's lives so that they can be ready to start school. All public schools receive WaKIDS funding and are expected to offer:

    Kindergarten Family Connection Visits

Before starting school, each new kindergartner's family is offered the chance to meet with their student's teacher to begin building a home-school partnership. In order for teachers to meet with families, the kindergarten start date is postponed until the next week. Your school will contact you in late August to schedule a time to meet. Please let us know if you would like us to arrange for an interpreter.

Please note: It is not known yet whether September 2021 Family Connection visits will be offered in person at schools or remotely by telephone or video-conference. Decisions will be made with guidance from state and local health departments.Updates will be posted here and on the SPS School News page.
