School Design and Construction

SPS Construction Projects

Most school design and construction at Seattle Public Schools is funded by local, voter-approved capital levies. Other funding sources include Distressed Schools Grants from the state of Washington and the state School Construction Assistance Program.

Major construction projects, such as replacement buildings or major modernization/historic renovations, continue over multiple years.

Smaller projects are usually scheduled for summer months to reduce disruption to teaching and learning. These summer projects include safety and security projects, seismic upgrades, building systems repairs or replacement, and roofing projects.

Current Major Projects

Construction begins summer 2021 on replacement three elementary schools: Kimball, Northgate, and Viewlands; phase II modernization of Lincoln High School, and additions at Leschi Elementary School, Madison Middle School, and West Seattle Elementary School.  Additions are under construction at Magnolia Elementary School, Coe Elementary School, and West Woodland Elementary School.

Planning is underway for an addition and modernization project to the Van Asselt School Interim site and to replace Mercer International Middle School and Rainier Beach High School.

Planning for Future Projects

Planning begins soon for school replacement projects for Alki Elementary School and John Rogers Elementary School, and for an addition and major modernization at the historic Montlake Elementary School. Construction on all three of these projects is scheduled to begin in summer 2023.
