SPS Construction Projects

Most school design and construction at Seattle Public Schools is funded by local, voter-approved capital levies. Other funding sources include Distressed Schools Grants from the state of Washington and the state School Construction Assistance Program.

Major construction projects, such as replacement buildings or major modernization/historic renovations, continue over multiple years.

Smaller projects are usually scheduled for summer months to reduce disruption to teaching and learning. These summer projects include safety and security projects, seismic upgrades, building systems repairs or replacement, and roofing projects.

Current Major Projects

Construction is underway for replacement of Rainier Beach High School.

Construction began summer 2023 on replacement of John Rogers Elementary School, modernization and addition at Montlake Elementary School, modernization and addition at Alki Elementary School, and replacement of Mercer International Middle School.

Planning for Future Projects

Planning has begun for modernization and an addition at Aki Kurose Middle School and replacement of Sacajawea Elementary School. Construction of those two projects will require approval of a future capital levy.
