I also taught middle school in L.A. for 7 years and at Mercer Middle school for 6 years. I love working with high school age students teaching PE. I live in Port Orchard and commute on the ferry every day. I have been married for 23 years and have 5 children including a senior and sophomore in addition to a 6th grader, 8th grader, and college sophomore at BYU. I am passionate about family, traveling, basketball, and (this is an odd one) fantasy baseball!! :-)

These are extraordinary times that while riddled with heartache, trauma, and growing inequalities, are also times that are filled with hope and possibility. It is my goal and my duty as an educator - particularly as an educator of color who teaches young people of color - to help those young people uncover their truths and manifest their dreams so that they feel empowered to liberate themselves and the world.
I'm entering my 6th year as an educator and am officially claiming the title of an abolitionist teacher, which means I am committed to...'the practice of working in solidarity with communities of color while drawing on the imagination, creativity, refusal, (re)membering, visionary thinking, healing, rebellious spirit, boldness, determination, and subversiveness of abolitionists to eradicate injustice in and outside of schools' (Dr. Bettina Love -- We Want To Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom).
I am excited to be a part of the Cleveland community - go Eagles!

jchughes@seattleschools.orgMr. Hughes has been an educator for a decade now (Madrona, South Shore, Cleveland). As a long time coach, he has created unique opportunities for Central/South Seattle student athletes, including international competition in China. Hughes has coached baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer. In 2019 he was inducted into the North American Fastpitch Association Coaches Hall of Fame.
Hughes has three daughters that played softball at Garfield (in 2019 Garfield won the state championship with many players Hughes coached with Seattle Spice Inner City).
Hughes was a local attorney before beginning his career in education. Athletics has always been a huge focus, as Hughes played football at Univ. of San Diego and was a cheerleader at Univ. of New Mexico.
Hughes has focused on increasing participation for Eagle student athletes and in 2019 brought in two new sports: girls bowling and slowpitch softball.
When Hughes is not coaching/teaching, you can find him fishing on his kayak, hanging with his family, or protesting in the streets for Black Lives Matter.
