I have been at Hale since 2012 and love being part of this school community I have taught every form of Algebra at Hale. Over the last decade, I have worked with students from many high schools in Seattle through the Upward Bound Program and love encouraging students of color to reach their goals.

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics: University of Washington (GO DAWGS!)
  • Teaching Certificate: City University of Seattle
  • Master's in Educational Leadership: Grand Canyon University

Over my time at Hale, I have been the advisor of the Anti-bullying Club, Meet-and-Eat Club, Robotics, and the Class of 2020. I am part of our school's Racial Equity Team as well as other roles. Reach out any time if you need help or questions. The best way to reach me is email.

I enjoy hiking, going on bike rides, and hanging out with my son Teddy and wife. One of my favorite things is to travel and experience new places/cultures.

Geometry and Precalculus

,Personal Message

This is my fourteenth year at Nathan Hale.  This year I am teaching Geometry and Precalculus.  I attended Stanford University and earned a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering.  While working for my for first few years after graduate school as an engineer, I found that I was spending much of my free time volunteering with youth.  I figured that since I really enjoyed working with youth, I might as well get a job doing it full time.  I love teaching math at Nathan Hale.  I am happy to help students any day at lunch or after school.  In my life away from Nathan Hale I enjoy spending time with my wife and two sons, biking, swimming, hiking and reading.

Biography

I am currently finishing my 20th year of teaching at Nathan Hale. My older daughter is graduating from Hale this year as part of the class of 2020. I am sad to see our time together at school come to an end, but I am grateful that I still have three more years with my younger daughter who will be a sophomore next year. Besides working with students to help them explore their writing, improve their communication skills, and progress in their "ontological vocation of becoming more fully human" (Freire), I am dedicated to anti-racist practices and helping those furthest from educational and social justice. I have much to learn and love being part of a community of educators committed to improving our pedagogy for the benefit of ALL students. Outside of Nathan Hale, I enjoy coaching and playing ultimate frisbee with my wife, running (especially with our Rhodesian Ridgeback), conditioning, reading, writing, playing guitar, and watching movies and playing games with my family.

As Ali once said to me: "We have two ears, Mr. Uhlman, and only one mouth: perhaps we should listen twice as much as we speak."
