WA Paid Family and Medical Leave Program

The new Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program was effective January 1, 2020. Washington state’s Employment Security Department (“ESD”) is continuing to work on finalizing all of the rules for the PFML program. Seattle Public Schools will review all of its existing policies and procedures to ensure that they comply with any changes ESD makes to the PFML program.

To apply for benefits, you will do so through the Employment Security Department (ESD). The ESD will determine if benefits will be paid, and for how long, if there is a waiting period before benefit payment is made, and they will process the payments, much like unemployment benefits are paid.

In the meantime, please refer to the ESD website at esd.wa.gov for information about how you can apply, how your approval will be determined, and how/if you will be eligible for pay.

You can find additional information as well as a downloadable checklist on the paidleave.wa.gov website or refer to the Washington Paid Family & Medical Leave Parents' and Patient and Family Guides.
