Statement on Withdrawal of School Closure Recommendations

Summary: A statement from Seattle Public Schools on the withdrawal of school closure recommendations.

Statement on Withdrawal of School Closure Recommendations

Following a vote by the Seattle School Board, the school consolidation plan for the 2025-26 school year has been withdrawn in response to board direction.

The withdrawal of the plan was not an easy choice for the board or Superintendent Brent Jones, but it reflects Seattle Public Schools (SPS) commitment to unity and the well-being of students and families. While the $5.5 million in potential savings under the plan is not insignificant, it would not solely resolve SPS’s $94 million budget shortfall and has been a source of community division.

As planned, SPS will continue to address its financial challenges by focusing on the upcoming levy renewals in February, legislative advocacy, and operational efficiencies. Thank you to our families, staff, and leadership team for your dedication and collaboration throughout this process.
