Garfield High School Welcomes Brandon Roy Home as Head Boys Basketball Coach

Summary: Garfield High School has announced the return of Brandon Roy as head boys basketball coach.

Garfield alum returns to lead program with a focus on students, academics, and strong community connections

Seattle Public Schools and Garfield High School have announced that Brandon Roy will return as head boys basketball coach for the 2026–27 school year.

A Garfield High School graduate and former NBA All-Star, Roy returns to the program where his basketball journey began. With strong ties to Garfield, the Central District, and the Seattle community, Roy brings a continued commitment to mentoring students and supporting their development both in and out of the classroom.

Prior to the 2025–26 season, Garfield and Seattle Public Schools referred questions regarding the boys basketball program to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), the governing body for high school athletics in Washington. Following its review, WIAA did not find a violation.

Coach Roy did not participate in coaching during the 2025–26 season while the review was underway. When the position became available this spring, Roy applied through Seattle Public Schools’ standard hiring process. He participated in a comprehensive interview process that included school leadership, athletics staff, a student-athlete, and a parent representative. After careful consideration of the program’s needs and expectations, Roy was selected as the top candidate.

Principal Hart

Garfield leadership emphasized that the next chapter of the boys basketball program will be centered on students first, with a strong focus on academic success, integrity, accountability, and clear communication with families.

Principal Dr. Tarance Hart noted the importance of aligning leadership with school values and expectations, underscoring that the program will operate with clear standards and compliance with district, league, and WIAA guidelines.

Superintendent Ben Shuldiner also highlighted the importance of supporting student-athletes holistically, with an emphasis on growth in the classroom, on the court, and as members of the broader community.

As the program moves forward, Garfield High School will continue to prioritize student achievement, family engagement, and a positive, structured environment that supports student success.

Garfield’s long-standing tradition of excellence in both academics and athletics remains central to its approach, with a continued emphasis on opportunity, accountability, and support for all student-athletes.
