Exploring Tomorrow: Rainier View Scholars Dream Big About the Future
Summary: Rainier View Elementary's first-ever Tigers Exploring Tomorrow Week gave scholars an opportunity to learn from community professionals
A week of career exploration, community connections, and hands-on learning helped students discover the many possibilities their futures can hold
What might your future hold? That was the question at the heart of Tigers Exploring Tomorrow Week, a new schoolwide initiative at Rainier View Elementary designed to help scholars explore careers, educational pathways, community leadership, and their own aspirations for the future.
Throughout the week, scholars connected with professionals from across the community who shared their experiences, skills, and journeys, helping students see how classroom learning can connect to real-world opportunities.
The week kicked off with a visit from King County Metro, where kindergarten and first-grade scholars learned about the many careers that help keep the region moving. Students discovered that organizations depend on people with a wide variety of talents and interests, from mechanics and scientists to bus operators and other essential staff members.
Next, second-, third-, and fourth-grade scholars welcomed the Seattle Police Department K-9 Unit. Officers shared information about careers in law enforcement and demonstrated how their highly trained canine partners assist in locating evidence. The visit gave students a firsthand look at the teamwork, training, and dedication required in this specialized field.
Scholars also had the opportunity to meet firefighters from Seattle Fire Station 33 for a hands-on exploration of careers in emergency response. Students climbed aboard a fire engine, learned about protective gear and specialized equipment, and watched a demonstration showing how firefighters locate people in smoke-filled environments. Along the way, they learned how different vehicles and tools help firefighters protect and serve the community.
On Thursday, fourth- and fifth-grade scholars heard from a community member who shared her personal educational and career journey. Through stories about her own experiences and those of her children, she reminded students that interests evolve, plans change, and new opportunities can appear when least expected. Her message encouraged scholars to stay curious, remain open to possibilities, and recognize that there is no single path to success.
The week concluded with a special visit from Jungle Jordan, a former Rainier View scholar who returned to campus to share his career as a zookeeper. He gave students an inside look at caring for animals and spoke about turning a passion into a profession. He also encouraged scholars to follow their interests, embrace new opportunities, and pursue the goals that inspire them. For many students, seeing a former Rainier View scholar return to share his journey was a powerful reminder that big dreams can begin right where they are today.
Through Tigers Exploring Tomorrow Week, Rainier View scholars explored careers, connected with community leaders, and gained valuable insight into the many possibilities that lie ahead. Most importantly, the week encouraged students to dream big, stay curious, and recognize that the future is full of opportunities waiting to be discovered.
At Rainier View Elementary, scholars aren’t just imagining tomorrow. They’re already exploring it.
