Catharine Blaine K-8 has built a reputation for academic excellence, strong student support, and a commitment to helping every student succeed. Now, that work is being recognized at both the state and national levels.

In 2026, U.S. News & World Report ranked Catharine Blaine as the No. 11 middle school in Washington and the highest-ranked middle school in Seattle. The school has also been recognized by the Washington School Recognition Program for the past three consecutive years for academic achievement, student attendance, and student growth.

For Principal Patrick Gray, the recognition reflects years of intentional work by staff, students, and families to create a culture of high expectations and continuous improvement.

As a non-alternative K-8 school, Catharine Blaine offers rigorous instruction across all core subjects while providing students with a wide range of opportunities to explore their interests. Middle school students can participate in STEM and arts electives, while students across grade levels have access to extended learning opportunities such as robotics, athletics, world language enrichment, and the school’s annual spring musical.

A key part of the school’s success is its collaborative approach to teaching and learning. Educators regularly work together to review student data, share instructional strategies, and identify ways to better support individual student needs. This focus on continuous improvement helps ensure students receive the support and challenge they need to thrive.

“The teachers at Blaine are true professionals,” said Principal Gray. “They put in the work to know every student, adjust their instruction to meet student needs, and they partner with families when they see students struggling academically or socially.”

School leaders say family partnerships are another important factor in student success. By maintaining strong communication and working closely with caregivers, staff can better support students both academically and socially.

The recent recognition serves as a reflection of the dedication of the entire Catharine Blaine community and reinforces the school’s commitment to providing engaging, challenging, and supportive learning experiences for every student.

For students, families, and staff, the honors celebrate more than rankings. They recognize the daily efforts taking place in classrooms and throughout the school community to help every student reach their full potential.
