Precalculus, Calculus, Statistics Instructional Materials Adoption 2026-27

The math content area of Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction has launched a Precalculus, Calculus, Statistics (PCS) Instructional Materials Adoption for the 2026-27 school year. The instructional materials adoption process will follow the Seattle Public Schools Selection and Adoption of Instructional Materials, Policy No. 2015. If approved by the Seattle School Board, the new instructional materials will be ready for implementation by the 2027-28 school year.

This adoption will include print and digital resources. SPS is a 1 to 1 district with laptops available for at-school and at-home use. Digital adoptions are funded through the 2022 Buildings, Technology, and Academics/Athletics Capital Levy V (BTA V). The adoption will include student materials and teacher resources that will be accessed through an online platform or learning management system. The adoption will include the purchase of hard copies of textbooks or workbooks.

The PCS Curriculum Adoption Committee is committed to choosing a high-quality curriculum that helps all students build a strong math identity and feel confident and in control of their learning. The committee will follow a step-by-step process that includes creating clear criteria, reviewing materials for bias, evaluating submissions, selecting top finalists, and learning from field testing. Through this process, the committee will work together to recommend curriculum that aligns with district priorities.

The goal is to create a committee that reflects the diverse perspectives and experiences of SPS students, families, and schools. Members selected to serve on the adoption committee will agree to follow the SPS School Board adoption process. Committee members will meet several times over a period of seven months.

Adoption Committee Meeting Schedule and Minutes

The committee will meet several times between August 2026 and March 2027. Saturday meetings will be held in-person at the John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence. The Wednesday meeting will be held virtually.

Committee members will prepare for meetings by reviewing provided materials in advance of scheduled meetings, and attend and participate in schedule meetings. Missing two consecutive meetings will result in an automatic opt-out of committee participation.

Adoption Committee Vision, Purpose, Goals, and Members

The Precalculus, Calculus, Statistics (PCS) Curriculum Adoption Committee is committed to selecting a high-quality, equitable, and inclusive curriculum that empowers all students to develop a strong math identity and sense of agency in their mathematics learning. Through a multi-step process (which includes developing clear criteria, reviewing materials for anti-bias and sensitivity, evaluating submissions, selecting top finalists, and learning from field testing) the committee will work collaboratively to recommend PCS curriculum that aligns with district priorities.

The purpose of the Precalculus, Calculus, Statistics Instructional Materials Adoption Committee is to thoughtfully evaluate, select, and recommend high-quality, research-based instructional materials through the processes outlined in Superintendent Procedure 2015SP.B. The committee aims to ensure that the chosen materials support diverse learning needs, foster student engagement, provide teachers with tools to effectively provide advanced mathematics instruction, and align with state standards and district goals.

Engage district staff and community to ensure that the review and selection process includes input and feedback from multiple stakeholders
Develop the selection criteria to be approved by the Instructional Materials Committee which are anchored in Seattle Excellence and Policy 0030
Review submitted materials for anti-bias and sensitivity
Evaluate submitted materials using the approved selection criteria
Review staff, student, and community feedback to determine interests and priorities across all groups
Narrow selection of materials to be field-tested
Review results of the field test to inform decision-making
Submit final selection to the Instructional Materials Committee for approval and recommendation to the Superintendent and School Board
Recommend the professional development training for educators and school staff to support successful implementation of the newly adopted instructional materials to ensure high-quality instruction and learning experiences

The committee will be made up of members who provide subject matter expertise, who provide perspectives of family members with current and/or past students in Precalculus, Calculus, and Statistics, or who are current SPS students. The committee will include:

Secondary math educators from different regions of Seattle
High school staff and school leaders from different regions of Seattle
Parents, guardians, or other family members of current or former secondary students who represent a wide range of schools and programs in SPS
SPS students who have participated in Precalculus, Calculus, and/or Statistics.

Members will be selected and appointed in accordance with School Board Policy 4110: Family & Community Advisory and Oversight Committees, and Procedure 4110SP. The district shall provide public notice to individuals and organizations that may reasonably be interested in serving on the adoption committee
