Anti-bias Review

Meeting Summary

1. The adoption committee reviewed the agenda, our timeline, and where to find materials for the day.
2. Elissa Farmer described the elimination/promotion process including the role of Purchasing & Curriculum and Department of Technology Services (DoTS), and that the technical review will include results from the Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) and Standards for Accessible Design (Americans with Disabilities Act- ADA). We discussed that all digital products used in Seattle Public Schools must meet strict Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). 
3. Committee read through OSPI’s Screening for Biased Content (https://ospi.k12.wa.us/policy-funding/equity-and-civil-rights/resources-school-districts-civil-rights-washington-schools/reviewing-instructional-materials-bias ) document. Committee engaged in small group and whole committee conversations.
4. Anti-bias review of the 25 Submitted Materials commenced using a tool adapted from the OSPI document.
5. Committee members were placed in random pairs and given no less than 3 Titles to review. Committee members were each directed to review one lesson and all the student materials, teacher materials, digital components, embedded supports, extensions, interventions, and the unit assessment associated with the lesson. They were also directed to review no less than 5 randomly selected pages from the student edition.
6. At the end of the anti-bias review, the committee reconvened and discussed the status of each of the 25 titles. At this time, 16 titles have been recommended to proceed, 5 titles recommended to proceed with caution, and 4 materials have been recommended for elimination.
7. The committee will vote on these results asynchronously before our November 7^th meeting. If there are any dissenting votes, we will begin our November 7^th meeting with a discussion and further votes.
