2025 Highly Capable Summer Math Program

2025 Highly Capable Summer Math Program

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is offering fifth grade students receiving Highly Capable (HC) services the opportunity to participate in the Sixth Grade Summer Math Online Program. This program is designed to support accelerated learning in math and prepare your student for placement in Math 7/8 next school year.

Families of eligible students received information about this opportunity via email.

The program follows the same accelerated pathway offered to SPS students attending SPS Elementary Pathway schools, enabling your student to stay on track to take Algebra 1 in seventh grade. This placement is for HC identified students transitioning to a Highly Capable Pathway Middle School (Robert Eagle Staff, Hamilton, Jane Addams, Madison and Washington) next school year.

Program Details:

  • Runs from July 7-August 16
  • Students will engage in an online, self-paced course through Imagine Learning, a Washington state approved provider.
  • Students will access Imagine Learning remotely using a computer or tablet, and an internet connection. Computers and internet access will be provided to students who request these items.
  • The Imagine Learning course has been modified specifically for Highly Capable students.

Expectations:

  • Ensure your student logs into Imagine Learning on a regular basis to complete the six-week program.
  • Review your student’s progress weekly and encourage them to reach out to their assigned Imagine Learning educator for help when needed.
  • Stay informed by checking emails and messages from SPS educators and the Department of Highly Capable Services team.
  • Support your student in completing all assigned units and assessments by the end of the program to ensure readiness for Math 7/8 in the fall.

Please note: This is a one-time opportunity, provided while we work on a more comprehensive Highly Capable program plan for all students entering HC Pathway Schools at the middle level.

The Imagine Learning course has been modified specifically to meet the needs of Highly Capable students. The content is designed to support accelerated learning in math and help students prepare for higher-level courses like Algebra 1 in 7th grade. Seattle Public Schools educators and math leadership have approved and adjusted the course.

  • Ensure that your student logs into Imagine Learning on a regular basis to stay on track with the program
  • Review your student’s progress weekly and encourage them to reach out to their assigned Imagine Learning educators for support if needed.
  • Keep up with the communication from the Highly Capable team.

It is important that families regularly communicate with the Department of Highly Capable Services regarding any barriers students encounter. Students who do not complete Math 6 before sixth grade will be enrolled in Math 6 at their middle school.

Imagine Learning has built-in assistance and should be contacted. The Department of Highly Capable Services will also be available during the summer.

Students must be assigned to a Highly Capable Pathway Middle School before the Wednesday, June 18 deadline. HC eligible students may use the transfer appeal process to transfer into their HC Pathway Middle School before enrolling in the summer math program. Families who submit a transfer appeal request for a sixth grade Highly Capable Pathway placement will have their appeals approved.

Please use this form to submit a transfer appeal.

Yes, families can register for the summer course, but will need to submit the transfer appeal paperwork by Thursday, June 19. Submit your transfer appeal using this form.

Highly Capable Pathway Middle Schools (Hamilton, Jane Addams, Madison, Robert Eagle Staff, and Washington) will be accepting other OSPI approved Math 6 courses (Online Learning Course Catalog-OSPI). This option is only available to students attending one of the five pathway middle schools. Please note that Geometry in eighth grade is the highest math course available at pathway middle schools. Students who take additional summer courses to accelerate further may not have math options during their eighth-grade year.

Students must be in United States to access this program, but the program is self- paced and students may be able to complete the program during the time that they are in the United States.

The program is self-paced, which allows students to advance through the units at their own speed. Students must complete the program within the six-week period. There is a pre-test component that allows students to move at a faster pace if they are familiar with the standards.

Families transferring from private schools have the opportunity to submit necessary test scores and paperwork for review in order to be evaluated for SPS Highly Capable (HC) services.

It’s important to note this summer opportunity is specifically available only to students who are already HC-identified in SPS and scheduled to attend a highly capable pathway middle school.

Yes, August 16 is a hard deadline. Students must complete the program on or before this date.

Please reach out to your middle school for more information. Class composition will depend on the specific middle school. Middle school scheduling is a complex process and school leaders are doing their best to make sure students are placed appropriately.

Math 7/8 is an option for all SPS seventh grade students. This track makes students eligible for AP calculus during their senior year of high school.

A laptop is recommended. The program is compatible with Apple. Please indicate on the registration form if you need to request a laptop for your student.

The Imagine Learning course has scheduled access to educators. More information will be communicated during the orientation process.

It is up to the parents and families to determine what works best for their student, as long as the course is completed via Imagine Learning.

We estimate approximately two to three hours per week as a general guide and timeline for the program. However, the program can be completed in whatever way makes the most sense for the student, this includes finishing the program early.

The course is aligned to sixth grade Common Core Standards. It is a different curriculum than the adopted SPS curriculum for our non-virtual schools.

There is no end of the course placement test. Successful completion of the course indicates a student will be successful in Math 7/8
