Board Governance Overview

How the School Board Functions

The Seattle School Board is responsible for setting the vision and policies for Seattle Public Schools. Board members review proposals, hear public input, and vote on policies and major district decisions. Meetings are open to the public and include opportunities for community participation.

Student Board Members participate in meetings by sharing student perspectives and engaging in discussions, helping ensure student voices are part of district conversations.

How Policies are Developed and Passed

Policies generally move through the following steps:

  1. Proposal – A policy or change is introduced by district leadership or board members.
  2. Review & Discussion – Board members review the proposal and ask questions.
  3. Public Input – Students, families, and community members may provide public testimony or written comments.
  4. Board Vote – The board votes to approve, revise, or reject the policy.
  5. Implementation – If approved, the district carries out the policy.

District Leadership Roles

  • Superintendent – Oversees daily operations of the school district and implements board-approved policies.
  • Associate Superintendents – Manage specific areas such as academics, operations, student services, or equity, and support the Superintendent in carrying out district goals.
  • Other District Leaders – Directors and department leaders oversee specific programs and initiatives and report to district leadership.
