New School Safety Tip Line

In keeping safety at the forefront of our district, Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is introducing the SaferWatch app, an innovative way for our school to ensure the safety of all staff and students. This initiative supports the district’s commitment to early intervention and proactive threat mitigation.

This federally funded platform helps keep our schools safe by offering tools like a panic button for law enforcement, medical reporting, anonymous tips, and schoolwide communication. It lets us quickly share and receive important information in real time, so we can respond right away if needed.

The SaferWatch application and tip line replaces the Safe Schools Hotline that was used to report concerns to SPS Safety & Security. SaferWatch tips are routed anonymously to trained professionals who assess and forward them to appropriate responders.

How to Submit a Tip

SPS reminds everyone that in the event of an immediate threat or emergency, dialing 911 remains the most appropriate action.

About SaferWatch

The platform comes to SPS through advocacy and collaboration with the Stand with Parkland movement, led by Tony Mantalto, whose daughter, Gina, was tragically among the 17 victims of the 2018 Parkland shooting. Reflecting on post-tragedy awareness, Mantalto emphasized that “students are often the first to know about a threat, typically through social media,” underscoring the urgent need for easy, real-time reporting tools like SaferWatch.

Another Parkland parent, April Schentrup—whose daughter Carmen was killed in the same incident—shared that she brought SaferWatch and the advocacy group to SPS attention following recent shootings at Seattle’s Ingraham and Garfield high schools. She noted that SaferWatch offers “a great compromise to having quick access to law enforcement but not having law enforcement within the schools directly.”

SaferWatch also provides mobile panic alert systems that comply with Alyssa’s Law, offering rapid, coordinated responses during on-campus emergencies. In the event of a police emergency, SaferWatch enables instant school lockdowns while simultaneously alerting law enforcement.

During medical incidents, SaferWatch notifies key campus personnel and automatically contacts emergency services—allowing staff to focus on the person in need. SaferWatch is proud to partner with Seattle Public Schools in advancing their mission to ensure a safe, secure learning environment for every student, staff member and visitor.

SaferWatch has played a critical role in preventing multiple planned school shootings, intervening in teen suicide cases, and stopping countless other safety-related incidents before they could escalate.

Frequently Asked Questions

SaferWatch is a safety communication platform that Seattle Public Schools uses to help protect students, staff, and the community. It allows quick reporting of school threats and any safety concerns, provides direct connection to school officials and first responders, and enhances emergency response.

SaferWatch provides the district with the ability to do more than just reporting tips/concerns to the district. It allows the district to notify multiple school leaders of potential threats in real-time, so they can determine the appropriate measures for their school community.

SaferWatch will also allow staff to utilize a virtual panic button, on the SaferWatch app, to request aid from local law enforcement when needed, while they are physically located at a Seattle Public School site.

The SaferWatch app works by allowing users to report incidents, send anonymous tips, or trigger a panic alert through their mobile device. When the panic button is activated, the app automatically sends the user’s location, profile, and potentially a live video or audio feed to designated administrators, law enforcement, and other first responders.

Yes, submitted tips can be 100% anonymous. However, you can choose to leave your contact information or request a call back if you wish to have a follow-up.

No, the app does not track locations, but it does use geofencing. Geofencing uses virtual boundaries to trigger actions when a device enters or exits an area, while location tracking focuses on continuously monitoring and recording a device’s position. The SaferWatch app deactivates once a student leaves their geofence.

Yes, incoming phone numbers are assigned a scrambled code, so numbers are not viewable to SaferWatch.

Students, parents, staff, and any community members who have relevant information to Seattle Public Schools are encouraged to use SaferWatch to help keep our schools safe. All reports are routed directly to the appropriate school personnel and, when necessary, law enforcement.

Download the free app in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and select Seattle Public Schools as your organization.

Yes. Your information is protected and is only shared with Seattle Public Schools personnel. When leaving a tip via text, a random phone number is generated. You have the option to share your contact information.

The purpose of this app is to report emergency tips. Audio files are sent to SPS Safety & Security. SaferWatch tips will only be shared with Seattle Public Schools.  No personal information will be shared with immigration authorities. The only information reported to authorities is in relation to imminent school threats.

Students should immediately report any safety concerns – especially threats of violence – to a school leader, staff member, or their school’s security specialist. Students can also submit tips directly to SaferWatch using the online form. They can also hit the “Report a Concern” button on the seattleschools.org home page.

If you call the previous Safe Schools Hotline number, the call will automatically be re-directed to the new SaferWatch tip line 206-222-HELP (4357).
