4/5 split Teacher

belawton@seattleschools.org

I am in my 28th year of teaching at MLK Jr. Elementary, formally Brighton where I teach 4th and 5th grades. My love for Science and Math allowed me to be on the John Muir Elementary school Science team. I was also on the Sharples Junior High (Aki M.S.) Computer/Math team where I learned BASIC computer language and started writing computer programs. I was a MESA student (Mathematics, Engineering & Science Achievement) at Franklin H.S. in 1983 an 1984 and was a member of the F.H.S. Math Olympiad team.  These STEM clubs propelled me to pursue Electrical Engineering at Seattle University my freshman year on an academic/baseball scholarship. I worked as a Recreation Leader for Seattle Parks and Recreation from 1989 to 1996 at Van Asselt, Rainer Beach and Garfield Community Centers. I ended up graduating with a B.S. in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of Washington, where I minored in engineering. I earned my Teacher Certification from Pacific Oaks College in 1997 and was hired as a teacher in the Seattle school district in the Fall of 97.  I am a trained MESA/STEM teacher who loves to play golf with my 12 and 8 year old grandsons and 4 year old granddaughter who says golf is boring!
