New Directors Sworn in to Seattle School Board

Seattle Public Schools welcomed fresh leadership to the Board of Directors at its meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 3, as elected and re-elected board members were sworn in.

Joining the Board as newly elected directors are Jen LaVallee (District 7) and Kathleen Smith (District 2). Continuing their service to our community are directors Joe Mizrahi (District 4) and Vivian Song (District 5). All four members were elected by voters last month.

This Board will collaborate directly with incoming Superintendent Ben Shuldiner, who begins on Feb. 1, 2026.

At Wednesday’s meeting, each director expressed excitement for the important work ahead, along with a shared commitment to listening to students, staff, families, and community members.

“We are so pleased to welcome our new directors,” said Board President Gina Topp. “This Board is committed to the real, hands-on work of strengthening our schools, improving how we operate, and staying rooted in our community. We share the superintendent’s vision for making Seattle the best urban school district in the country, and we’re ready to get to work together.”

The Board is eager to move forward into this next chapter of service, partnership, and support for the students and families of Seattle.
