Summary: Here are 10 tips our community can incorporate at home and at school to be better stewards of the environment!

Ten Tips for Earth Day 

As Earth Day approaches (April 22, 2022), here are 10 tips offered by the school district’s Resource Conservation Team our community can incorporate at home and at school to be better stewards of the environment!

At Home 

At home, students and families can focus on five areas: 

Energy

Turn off lights and equipment when not in use. Request an Energy Efficiency Kit from Seattle City Light

Water

Report/repair leaky faucets and toilets. Did you know that the average leaky toilet can waste about 200 gallons of water per day? Learn more about how to Use Water Wisely

Food

Eat less meat (saves water); eat local (saves on transportation); learn how to grow your own food even with limited space

Waste

Reduce single-use waste by using reusable containers for lunch, personal utensils, and a refillable water bottle. Read about how the district is reducing plastic water bottle waste.

Transportation

Reduce car trips by combining errands, carpooling, walking, or biking 

At School

At schools, students can make everyday Earth Day by: 

School Sustainability Coordinator

Finding out who the sustainability coordinator is at your school. If there isn’t one, nominate a teacher. 

Start a Green Team!

Starting a Green Team at your school. 

Get Certified

Contacting EarthGen and get certified in one of eight categories. 

Walk or Bike to School

Starting a Walking School Bus or Bike Train to get safely to school without arriving by a vehicle. 

Get School Utility Data

Contacting the Resource Conservation Team to get utility data for your school (electricity, natural gas, water, garbage, recycling, and compost) for additional conservation efforts.
