Kathleen Smith is a parent of two young children, with her oldest, a kindergartener, enrolled in Seattle Public Schools. Her parents, both educators, instilled in her a deep respect for education and the role of strong public institutions in building a cooperative, fair, and kind society. She believes public institutions exist to serve the public, but we must recognize the ways our systems fail to serve people in order to improve them.

Kathleen holds a PhD in mathematics with a focus on probability and works as a data scientist at Microsoft. With experience in both federal service and technology, she brings an analytical lens and a scientific approach to problem-solving. She views the district as a system that must be strengthened to serve students and educators effectively.

Her priorities include regaining community trust through engagement and transparency, fostering a collaborative culture, and using research-backed, evidence-based approaches to improve learning environments for all students. She is committed to community building, listening to student voices, and working cooperatively with fellow board members. Kathleen believes that by supporting educators and addressing systemic challenges, Seattle’s schools can provide thriving environments for every child.
