2026 Highly Capable Summer Math Program

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is committed to providing math acceleration options for high achieving students as they transition from elementary to middle school.

SPS will offer three options for math enrollment in sixth grade for exceptional math learners. These options are designed to help students learn and grow at a pace that supports their academic needs. Highly Capable (HC) identification is not a requirement. Eligibility is determined by math MAP (RIT) scores.

Please note that HC students attending HC elementary schools (Cascadia, Decatur, Thurgood Marshall) have already accelerated two years ahead in math and will have the option of enrolling in Compacted Math 7/8 OR Math 8 in sixth grade.

Option 1: Sixth Grade Math at Your Pathway School

  • Students enroll in Math 6 during 6th grade.
  • Progression:
    • Seventh grade: Compacted Math 7/8
    • Eighth grade: Algebra
    • High school: AP Calculus by senior year

Option 2: Summer Math Program + Math 7/8 in 6th Grade at Your Pathway School

  • Students complete the HC department sponsored, online summer course and enroll in Compacted Math 7/8 as sixth graders.
  • Progression:
    • Seventh grade: Algebra
    • Eighth grade: Geometry
    • High school: AP Calculus by junior year

Option 3: Direct Enrollment into Compacted Math 7/8 in Sixth Grade

Students who demonstrate exceptional math achievement via the MAP assessment during fifth grade will be eligible to enroll directly in Compacted Math 7/8 as sixth graders.

Families of eligible students will receive more details on Thursday, April 23 and the Department of HC Services will work with families to confirm  which enrollment option they prefer. The HC department will also confirm final math enrollment with schools during August.
