About the Project
In 2011, the former John Hay Elementary School, known then as “Old Hay,” was modernized and re-opened to house a new option school, Queen Anne Elementary. Providing more seats will help accommodate enrollment growth in the district.
This project constructed an addition to the 1922 brick building, allowing the school to better meet the needs of the students, staff and teachers. The addition provides a full-size gymnasium, eight new classrooms, and one of the first dedicated elementary makerspaces in the state. The addition also houses the school’s new main entrance, providing a secure entrance controlled by staff. Locating the entrance and the school office in the new addition put it at the heart of the school, providing a closer connection to the students and teachers housed in the historic wood building. The previous administrative offices were renovated to create an additional classroom in the existing building.
Building Size
The addition provides 19,975 square feet and allows the school to accommodate 170 additional elementary students for a total of 500. There are four kindergarten classrooms and three classrooms for grades 1-5 in the addition, and one renovated classroom in the existing building.
