What Is a School Board Student Representative?
A School Board Student Representative represents the voices, experiences, and concerns of Seattle Public Schools students at school board meetings and district discussions.
What Student Representatives Do
School Board Student Representatives:
- Attend school board meetings and select committees
- Share student perspectives during discussions
- Review board materials and policies
- Communicate updates back to students
- Listen to and gather student input from across the district
What Student Representatives Do Not Do
School Board Student Representatives:
- Do not make decisions alone
- Do not represent only one school or group
- Do not share confidential information
- Do not speak on behalf of all students without listening first
Time Commitment
- Regular board meetings (usually evenings)
- Preparation time to review materials
- Outreach and communication with students
Expectations
School Board Student Representative are expected to:
- Act professionally and respectfully
- Represent students fairly and thoughtfully
- Communicate clearly and honestly
- Follow district policies and guidelines
- Balance school responsibilities with board work
