What Is a Student Board Member?

A Student Board Member represents the voices, experiences, and concerns of Seattle Public Schools students at school board meetings and district discussions.

What Student Board Members Do

Student Board Members:

• Attend school board meetings and select committees
• Share student perspectives during discussions
• Review board materials and policies
• Communicate updates back to students
• Listen to and gather student input from across the district

What Student Board Members Do Not Do

Student Board Members:

• Do not make decisions alone
• Do not represent only one school or group
• Do not share confidential information
• Do not speak on behalf of all students without listening first

Time Commitment

• Regular board meetings (usually evenings)
• Preparation time to review materials
• Outreach and communication with students

Expectations

Student Board Members are expected to:

• Act professionally and respectfully
• Represent students fairly and thoughtfully
• Communicate clearly and honestly
• Follow district policies and guidelines
• Balance school responsibilities with board work
