Life Skills and Vocational Learning

Summary: Students in Ballard High School’s Life Skills program are putting their vocational training into action through a student-run coffee service.

Beaver Beans Café Brings Real-World Skills to Life at Ballard High School

At Ballard High School, learning goes far beyond the classroom walls. Through the Life Skills and vocational learning program, students are gaining hands-on experience by running their own coffee delivery service, Beaver Beans, building confidence, independence, and real-world job skills along the way.

From selling coffee cards and collecting payments to labeling orders and pulling espresso on a professional machine, students take the lead in every step of the process. They also focus on essential life skills like following checklists, task analysis, communication, and developing fine and gross motor skills, all while ensuring every cup meets their quality standards.

For their final project, students expanded their service with a new concept: an in-person café hosted in the Life Skills Lab. On June 12, staff were invited to step into a cozy, student-run café experience featuring handcrafted drinks, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches—all served by the Beaver Beans team.

Designed with a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a creative, student-developed menu, the café offered more than just a morning pick-me-up. It created a space for connection, celebration, and a chance for students to showcase what they’ve learned throughout the year.
