COVID Testing Results

Summary: COVID-19 testing is part of SPS’s plan to preserve in-school learning in safe and healthy schools. Testing is encouraged but not required.

We continue to make in-person learning a priority. As part of that commitment, SPS picked up 60,000 COVID-19 tests from the state Department of Health last week and tested 14,021 students and staff on Sunday and Monday before welcoming everyone back into classrooms on Tuesday, January 4. Approximately 4% of the tests were positive, and anyone testing positive for COVID 19 was sent home to isolate for 10 days.

On Tuesday, January 4, absence rates for both staff and students were typical for the first day of school in the new year.

Many of you waited in long lines on a cold winter day to get tested at our pop-up clinics. Thank you for helping us maintain a healthy learning environment as we returned from the winter break. Find more information about where and when your student can get a COVID-19 test.

SPS is committed to in-person learning. We also recognize that the health and safety of our students and staff has to come first. We are positioned to go to limited periods of remote learning at the classroom or school level if that’s what it takes to ensure a healthy learning environment.

Closing a school is always the last resort, but you can help prepare for a period of remote instruction, should that be required, by making sure your student’s device is working and updated. Check with your school if your student doesn’t have a device or if you will need a hotspot.

COVID-19 testing is part of SPS’s plan to preserve in-school learning in safe and healthy schools. Testing is encouraged but not required. We also rely on access to vaccines, strong ventilation, universal masking, physical distancing, and vaccinated adults at each of our 106 schools. Find information about student COVID vaccine clinics.

SPS leadership meets daily to look at all data, COVID-related concerns, and the best way to keep students safe, healthy, and in the classroom, where learning is at its best.

Thank you again for your support and participation in keeping our schools safe.
