    About Lisa Rivera-Smith

Director Lisa Rivera-Smith was elected to a four-year term in the November 2019 General Election and is proud to represent District II, which includes Wallingford, Fremont, Green Lake, Greenwood and Maple Leaf.

Born and raised in central California, Lisa was the first person in her family to graduate from college, attending California State University, Chico. While earning a Bachelors degree in Journalism (News Editorial), and a Minor in Ethics, Lisa served as an editor on the university’s award-winning newspaper, and upon graduation, was awarded the CSU, Chico Presidential Medal for Contribution to Student Life.

Days after graduating, Lisa packed up and came to Seattle to become The Seattle Times’ first ever 3-year Editorial Intern. But after just six months on the job, Lisa joined fellow Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild union members from the Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in a 49-day strike against both papers.

A wife and mother of three, Lisa spent years as a volunteer and advocate. After working for The Seattle Times and other papers in California, Lisa dedicated her time to her family, community, and a myriad of educational, environmental and social justice causes. She has worked to facilitate communication among parents via online forums, and lent her talents and expertise to many Seattle-area nonprofits, such as Seattle Tilth, Girl Scouts of Western Washington, North Seattle Baseball Assoc., Seattle Labor Chorus and five years as Green Team advisor at Hamilton International Middle School.

Prior to serving on the Seattle School Board, Lisa was PTSA President at Hamilton, and subsequently started up the Lincoln High School PTSA, serving as its' Co-President before stepping down to serve on the Seattle School Board. On the school board, Lisa is a voting member of the Student Services, Curriculum & Instruction Committee and the Audit & Finance Committee, but consistently attends all four board committee's meetings, and also serves as the board’s Head Start Program Liaison, Capital Change Order Review Liaison, Seattle Schools Scholarship Committee Member, and BEX/BTA Oversight Committee Member.

Lisa welcomes your emails, phone calls, texts and social media messages. She can be reached by phone at 206-475-1817, by email at Lisa.Rivera-Smith@SeattleSchools.org, and on Facebook at facebook.com/lisariverasmithsps, where Lisa posts agendas of Seattle School Board meetings of all kinds, news from the community, and information on school-related topics.

Be well, stay strong and keep in touch!
