Finalists Named for 6-12 Spanish Language Materials

An adoption committee of families, staff and community members has selected materials from two vendors as finalists to consider for use in middle through high school Spanish world language classes. Twenty Spanish teachers from across the district were recruited to represent the five regions of the district.

“Both finalists offer quality, authentic, and diverse texts as well as multiple layers of support for Spanish language instruction to meet the needs of a broad range of students,” said Dr. Michele Anciaux Aoki, international education administrator and world languages program manager.

The selection of finalists completes round one of the adoption process. In round two, the finalists will be field tested in more than 25 middle and high school classrooms across the district during May and June. The Spanish Adoption Committee will use data from the field study and stakeholder feedback to inform its top choices among the instructional materials offered at various levels. The School Board is expected to make the final selection in Summer or Fall 2019 in time for materials to be used in some classrooms by Fall or Winter 2019, pending approval by the School Board and funding.

    The finalists are:

Four vendors had submitted materials that addressed the district’s requirements for ADA compliance. The committee then reviewed the materials based on additional factors, including anti-bias and sensitivity guidelines as well as the review criteria agreed upon by the Spanish Adoption Committee in November 2018, and approved by the Instructional Materials Committee. “The committee worked diligently in support of students, teachers and school leaders to identify engaging and effective instructional materials,” Aoki said.
