National Farm to School Month
There is so much to celebrate around school meals this month! In October, students will get to try new recipes, like a Smoked Salmon Chowder Bowl and Roasted Butternut Squash Salad in celebration of Farm to School Month, which kicks off a national program to bring fresh, locally grown ingredients to students. During National School Lunch week, from October 12-16, students are encouraged to show their school lunch spirit with new, daily themes.
National Farm to School Month, October 2020
During the month of October, Seattle Public Schools will be celebrating National Farm to School Month. SPS Nutrition Services staff debuted the first new meal on Taste Washington Day, October 7 – a Smoked Salmon Chowder Bowl. This menu item will be offered at school meal sites on the following days:
October 7: Rainier Beach, Rainier View, Denny, Olympic View, Broadview-Thomson, Seattle World School, Rising Star, Bryant, John Hay, Sandpoint
October 14: Blaine, Boren, Franklin, Graham Hill, Hale, Mercer, North Beach, Northgate, Thurgood Marshall, Whittier
October 21: Aki Kurose, Beacon Hill, Concord, Eckstein, Hawthorne, Lowell, Madrona, Maple, Olympic Hills, TOPS
October 28: Adams, Arbor Heights, BF Day, Cedar Park, Bailey Gatzert, Highland Park, Madison, Robert Eagle Staff, Roxhill, Viewlands
Throughout the school year, menus will feature scratch-made, locally-sourced items up to two times a month on school breakfast and/or lunch menus. This includes sourcing fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins from local farms and vendors and implementing them in a creative way on the menu. This will be a districtwide upgrade to the breakfast and lunch menus to create safe and welcoming environments for all students, a priority goal of the district’s five-year strategic plan Seattle Excellence, which was implemented by Superintendent Juneau in 2018.
