2021-22 Preschool and Kindergarten First Day Changed to Thursday, September 9

Seattle Public Schools is excited to welcome preschool and kindergarten students to school for the 2021-22 school year. We acknowledge that our students and their families are valued partners in their education and that families may need extra support as we transition back to classrooms. We also know that the previously scheduled first day of instruction conflicted with Rosh Hashanah and would limit some of our families from participating in the start of school for our youngest learners.

SPS was able to change the start date and the first day of whole class instruction for preschool and kindergarten students will be Thursday, September 9.

The passage from preschool to kindergarten is an exciting life transition, and we want to maximize family partnership during this important time.

For the 2021-22 school year, SPS will implement PreK/K Connects in addition to Jump Start and Family Connections as a strategy for kindergarten transition and for advancing racial equity for families and students furthest from educational justice.

2021-22 Preschool and Kindergarten Start of School Key Dates

Please note the following dates for 2021-22 preschool and kindergarten.

Jump Start: August 17-18, for participating schools. Jump Start is a kindergarten transition program. The week-long orientation to school serves as a kind of "day camp" for children to come to their new school, meet staff and peers, and practice kindergarten routines. Jump Start is FREE, and takes place in August. Read more about Jump Start.

PreK/K Family Connections conferences: Wednesday, September 1 through Friday, September 3.

These one-on-one meetings are intended to welcome families to school and provide a safe environment for families to speak freely with the teacher, share information about their child, and ask questions.

PreK/K Connects: Tuesday, September 7 and Wednesday, September 8.

    • Additional time for teachers, families, and students to meet outside of the Family Connections conferences.
    • Determine individual family and student supports in the areas of technology, social emotional learning, and health and safety.
    • Can be an individual or small group experience.
    • Families will be invited to join their child at school at a time scheduled with their teacher to get a glimpse of the school day, daily schedule, curriculum, and learn about technology and health and safety practices.
    • These meetings are optional, and no instruction will take place on these two days.
