Planning in Progress for BTA V Capital Levy

Planning has begun for the district’s next capital levy. The Seattle School Board is expected to place the Buildings, Technology, and Academics Capital Levy V (BTA V) on the ballot for February 2022. An Educational Programs and Operations Levy (EP&O) is also being planned for the February 2022 election.

BTA levy projects are divided into three categories.

    • Buildings: Building construction and building systems improvement/replacement, major preventive maintenance
    • Technology: Funding for technology used by students, teachers, schools, and the district as well as support and training for technology users.
    • Academic/Athletics: Modifications needed for academic program changes, playground improvements, athletic field improvements

Studies of building conditions and educational adequacy have been done to evaluate the condition of each district building with a report to be delivered this spring. The result will be a scored list of improvements needed at each school. Those with the poorest scores will be considered for BTA V projects. A study of seismic (earthquake safety) conditions is underway.

The Seattle School Board approved Guiding Principles for BTA V on Wednesday, March 10, 2021. In addition to these guiding principles, staff will take a variety of factors into consideration in developing a list of recommended projects, including:

This spring, the district will provide options for families and community members to learn about the selection process and provide feedback.
