    Kindergarten Begins with Jump Start

Jump Start is a FREE week-long experience for kindergartners to learn about kindergarten. Children will become familiar with their school building, staff, typical school day activities and practices.

    Important Dates for Kindergarten Families

    • Aug. 20 - 24 Jump Start
    • Sept. 5 - 7 Each family meets with their kindergarten teacher
    • Sept. 10 First day of school for kindergarten students (grades 1 through 12 will start school on Sept. 5)

For more information, please contact Mary Fickes at Seattle Public Schools’ Early Learning department 206-252-0127, mpfickes@seattleschools.org.

    Jump Start

Most Seattle elementary and K-8s offer Jump Start (check the list below for your school). Children must be assigned to a participating school to attend Jump Start there. Schools will offer bilingual help to English language learners and extra support to children with special needs.

Families are asked to drop off and pick up children each day; no transportation is provided. Your school will contact you about snacks or meals and any other items your child will need.

Jump Start helps kindergartners, families and staff alike!

    Kindergartners:

    • Experience joyful learning
    • Learn and practice school routines
    • Become comfortable in the classroom and school building

    Families:

    • Get to know other families with same-age children
    • Meet the principal and staff and ask questions

    Staff:

    • Begin building relationships with students
    • Learn about students’ skills and strengths

How to register for Jump Start

Families receive the registration form for JumpStart when completing the online registration or can access it on the Early Learning webpage. Once you have completed the form, give it to the front office staff at your child's school.

Additionally, schools that are participating in Jump Start will begin to contact families of new kindergartners in May to help them sign up. Read more about Jump Start.
