    Instructional Models and Illustrative Schedules

Seattle Education Association (SEA) and the Seattle Public Schools (SPS) have agreements for instructional models for remote and in-person learning for the remainder of the school year. The School Board and SEA have both approved the kindergarten - 5th grade model for learning. Students in PreK-5th grade begin the new model Monday, April 5.

The tentative agreement between SEA and SPS for the model for 6th - 12th grades will need SEA and School Board approval. If the tentative agreement is approved by SEA and the School Board, these new models for 6th - 12th grade will begin on Monday, April 19.

SPS will send families with students in 6th - 12th grade an intent to return survey. Families will be asked to select the 100% remote model or hybrid, in-person model for the remainder of the year.

Instructional Model Scenarios and Schedules for Students in Grades 6 - 12

Seattle Education Association (SEA) and the district have agreed on 6th - 12th grade instructional models for remote and in-person learning for the remainder of the school year. The models prioritize keeping teachers with their current classes, whether students choose to stay 100% remote or return for two half days of in-person learning each week. If the tentative agreement is approved by SEA and the School Board, these new models will begin on Monday, April 19.

SPS and SEA recognize that many students, particularly students furthest from educational justice, may want to continue learning in a remote setting for the last nine weeks of the school. We have prioritized continuity of learning for all 6th - 12th grade students, while ensuring that students who choose to stay 100% remote remain in classes with current peers and teachers. The schedule and instructional models will support a high-quality learning experience for all students throughout the day.

This agreement also prioritizes social-emotional and targeted intervention supports for students. The pandemic has affected older students in a multitude of ways. Students told us in our fall student survey that connections with their peers is important. Small group instruction, social-emotional learning, and community building are intentionally built into the schedule.

Secondary (Grades 6-12) Illustrative Schedules for Spring 2021

Seattle Education Association and Seattle Public Schools have reached a tentative agreement to provide in-person learning for grades 6-12. The schedule that was agreed upon does its best to finish this year strong keeping educators and students connected. Students, in-person and remote learners, begin April 5 for 6-12 grade Special Education Intensive Service Pathways students and April 19 for all other secondary students.

The tentative agreement strives to keep students with their current educators and provides four full days of instruction for all students. Students in secondary schools, regardless of learning model, will receive synchronous remote classes in the morning four days a week. In the afternoons, middle and high schools will offer all students both remote and in-person small group and individual instruction and support. Students that select the in-person instructional model will attend class two, 1/2 days per week. Students enrolled in an intensive service pathway will receive four, 1/2 days of in-person instruction. K-8 schools will determine whether secondary students receive in-person instruction in the morning or afternoon. Wednesdays will continue to be 100% remote for all students.

Instructional Model Scenarios and Schedules for Students in Grades K-5

    Scenarios Grades K-5

SPS and Seattle Education Association have agreed on two instructional models for elementary students for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year. A 1/2 day hybrid (in person part-time and remote part-time) model or 100% remote instruction model.

While we are trying to maintain the relationship between students and their current teacher, this may not be possible. There are a number of factors that will determine who your child’s teacher is. These factors include, 1) the number of staff who need a remote accommodation (can’t teach in-person), 2) the number of students in a given grade level who select in-person versus the 100% remote model, 3) the square footage of the actual classroom space. Below are examples of the instructional model schedules and how classrooms may be organized.

There are three scenarios possible, based on Return to In-Person Survey results:

    Scenario 1

graphic, information is published in the paragraph belowIn Scenario 1, about half the students in a class have selected in-person learning and half the 100% remote model. This will result in two groups, where the in-person group will have in-person instruction in the mornings and remote instruction in the afternoons. Afternoon remote instruction for students enrolled in the 1/2 day hybrid model will be a combination of live instruction from specialists such as arts and physical education and independent learning. The 100% remote group will participate in remote instruction with specialists and independent learning in the morning. In the afternoon, the remote group will receive live synchronous instruction from the classroom teacher. Both groups will have the same educator for half the day, while the other half of the day will be time for instruction from specialists.

    * Some classroom teachers may remain remote even if the majority of their class chooses in-person learning due to health accommodations.

    Scenario 2

graphic, information is in paragraph belowIn Scenario 2, most students in a class have selected to return to in-person learning. In this case, there will be a larger In-Person Group and a smaller Remote Group. The In-Person Group will be divided in half, where group A is learning in-person in the morning and then remotely in the afternoon and group B is learning remotely in the morning and in-person in the afternoon. The In-Person group will have the same in-person educator while the remote group has a different educator. Remote instruction for students enrolled in the half-day, hybrid in-person model will be a combination of live instruction from specialists such as arts and physical education and independent learning.

    * Some classroom teachers may remain remote even if the majority of their class chooses in-person learning due to health accommodations.

    Scenario 3

graphic, information is published in the paragraph belowIn Scenario 3, most students in the class have selected the 100% remote instruction model. The remote group will have the same educator, while the smaller number of students who chose in-person will have a different educator in the mornings for in-person learning and have remote instruction in the afternoons. Students enrolled in the half-day, hybrid in-person model will receive a half-day of remote learning through a combination of live instruction from specialists such as arts and physical education and independent learning.

Illustrative Schedules for Kindergarten - 5th Grade

    K-5 Schedules

Schedules and the staffing approach for grades K-5 may vary by class based on which option (part day in-person or 100% remote) students choose.

For example, in schools where there are not enough students to make up two in-person cohorts (AM/PM), there will be one cohort (A) for in-person instruction and another cohort (B) that is 100% remote. Students remaining with their current teacher is a priority but may not always be possible.

Your student’s school will communicate the final schedule and educator after families have submitted the Intent to Return Survey and prior to April 5th.

    Hybrid: In-Person and Remote K-5

    • Cohort A will attend class in-person in the mornings on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday each week. They will then do synchronous and asynchronous remote learning in the afternoons and all day on Wednesdays.
    • Cohort B will attend class remotely all day Monday through Friday. Learning will be synchronous and asynchronous in the mornings and all learning will be synchronous in the afternoons on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday each week. Wednesday learning will be synchronous and asynchronous.
