The Head Start programs in Seattle Public Schools serve three-year and four-year-old children and offer full-day and half-day programs at various schools across the district. Head Start is a federally funded child development program for children of low-income families.

Head Start prepares young children for kindergarten and provides a supportive learning environment for children and their families. Head Start supports of all aspects of a child's development, including social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth.

    Head Start also provides:

    • Full-day and half-day programs at elementary schools in Seattle
    • Transportation to and from school (within school boundaries)
    • Inclusive classrooms for children of all abilities
    • School readiness and smooth transitions to kindergarten
    • Family support, health, and nutrition services
    • Student meals
    • Activity kits and iPads for remote learning

Enrollment is open year-round. Enroll your child at any time to get on the waiting list for the next opening in a Head Start classroom.

    We serve:

    • Children who are age 3 or 4 by August 31
    • Income eligible families (meeting Federal Poverty Guidelines)
    • Foster Children
    • Homeless families
    • Families receiving TANF/Working Connections/SSI

Head Start programs have income requirements for families and you will be asked to provide proof of your income for the preceding calendar year. Seattle Public Schools Head Start programs are for families residing in the City of Seattle and your child must live within the Seattle city limits to be eligible. Students can apply to attend a Head Start program at any school site that offers it – not just their home school.

If you are ineligible for Head Start or placed on a waitlist for a program that is currently full, the Head Start team can help you enroll your child in another SPS preschool program.
