    District Sustainability Work Recognized on Earth Day

    On Earth Day 2020 on April 22, Seattle Public Schools was named 2020 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School District Sustainability Awardee.

    The award recognizes districts that reduce environmental impact and costs; improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and provide effective environmental and sustainability education.

    District efforts highlighted include:

    • District resource conservation policies, guidelines, and School Board resolutions that provide the foundations for sustainability work.
    • Extensive work on conservation, reduction of environmental impacts, and cost savings, plus close management and monitoring of utility use and costs.
    • A focus on tuning and maintaining HVAC equipment in existing buildings and installing energy-efficient systems in new schools and when retrofitting.
    • Risk management focused on environmental health and safety as well as safety of students, staff, and visitors.
    • Transportation policies and practices to reduce fuel use and air pollution.
    • Nutritional Services work to provide healthy breakfast and lunches to students every day, plus additional programs for schools with vulnerable populations.
    • Onsite learning gardens or regular off-site environmental learning options at 80% of schools.
    • Science curriculum that includes environmental and sustainability literacy topics.
