Candidates with an Associate Degree

Candidates with a transferable associates degree have two schools to choose from to complete your Bachelor’s of Art (BA)

Pathway 1: Candidates without a Transferable Associate Degree

Candidates, including Seattle Public Schools seniors, recent graduates, and staff, with a high school diploma but without a transferable associate degree can take Pathway 1 to earning their teaching certificate. Read more about this pathway.

Pathway 2: Candidates with a Transferable Associate Degree

Candidates, including Seattle Public Schools seniors, recent graduates, and staff with a transferable associates degree have two schools to choose from to complete your Bachelor of Art (BA) and teacher certification:

Central Washington University

Minimum Eligibility Requirements : Transferable associate degree and passing scores on subtest of WEST-B

Coursework : Eight quarters

Placement during internship : Placed in SPS classrooms with identified mentor teachers

Degrees awarded : Bachelors of Arts, Teaching Certificate

Endorsements : Special Education with K-8 Elementary or ELL with K-8 Elementary

District support available : Up to $12,000 in tuition supports per year

Additional employee benefit : Upon successful completion of the program, candidates will receive an ELL or special education teaching position in SPS.

North Seattle College

Minimum Eligibility Requirements : Transferable associates degree

Coursework : Eight quarters

Placement during internship : Placed in classrooms with identified mentor teachers in SPS

Degrees awarded : Bachelors in Digital Technology and Cultures, Teaching Certificate

Endorsements : N/A

District support available : Up to $10,000 in tuition supports per year

Additional employee benefit : Upon successful completion of the program, candidates can choose one of the other pathways offering a teaching certificate and/or other University of Washington Teacher Certification Programs

Become an ARE Future Educator

How to apply:

  1. If you work as an SPS staff member, communicate with your supervisor and the teachers with whom you work regarding your intent to apply for the ARE program(s). You will need letters of recommendation from those who have seen your work with students.
  2. Take the Washington Educator Skills Tests:
  3. Apply to the university pathway that matches your qualifications and desired certification area(s).

WEST-B Equivalent Tests

  • SAT and ACT cut score equivalents
  • Out of state tests may eligible to be submitted in lieu of the WEST-B

Seattle Public Schools provides tuition support for qualified ARE candidates contingent on which ARE Pathway you are enrolled in. If you will need financial support outside of what the district provides, explore the Federal Student Aid website.

Transcripts from Schools Outside the U.S.

If you have foreign transcripts, have them evaluated for equivalency. One agency is Foundation for International Services.
