SPS Family Resources

Seattle Public Schools is excited to begin the creation of learning materials in partnership with various community organizations. We are in the stage of creating and sustaining these partnerships with the hope that we can co-create our Ethnic Studies program in a meaningful, community-centered way. Below are links to some of the organizations we are beginning to partner with. Many offer valuable community resources and advocate for the well-being of our community.

Fathers and Sons Together (FAST)

FAST is a 501©3 youth development organization based in Southeast Seattle centered on providing guidance, support, and nurturing to underprivileged youth-particularly youth of color. Our work promotes lifestyle changes that support improved educational outcomes, improved health and wellness, and better decision making from our youth, while also encouraging community advocacy and engagement from youth and parents alike.

Studies show that children who enjoy the support of a strong father figure displays better decision-making skills, are more likely to achieve academically, and do better in the workplace as adults—all of which contribute to lowered risk of involvement in the criminal justice system. FAST seeks to aid in the creation of these bonds by supporting fathers to be present, positive and active with their sons-building loving relationships that feature good boundaries, direct involvement, and strength of character on both sides of the generational divide. We recognize the unfortunate statistics of fatherless homes in our communities and encourage uncles, grandfathers, coaches, and mothers and like to join our program as mentors to their youth. Supporting strong father/son relationships has a positive impact on the mental and emotional health of young men. It has the influence to improve the academic and vocational function; and aids in positive decision making; positioning our youth to become active and able participants in community life as they reach adulthood. Our primary focus is to prevent our youth from entering the juvenile justice systems and to empower their fathers/mentors to take ownership of their journey. This all begins at home.

To date, FAST has successfully developed several FREE signature projects where we empower, educate, and enjoy an activity, food and dynamic workshops featuring open discussions led by professional African American leaders as facilitators on relevant topics which directly affect our community: Fishing Day & Play, Empowerment Baseball Camp, Empowerment Basketball Camp, Barbershop Chat Chew & Play, Walk for Change, Father and Son overnight Camping Experience.
