    What are the demographics of Green Lake, John Stanford International School (JSIS) and McDonald International School (McDonald)?

    How many students move into the Green Lake attendance area after first grade?

    Students can’t enroll at McDonald or John Stanford international schools after first grade unless they have a background in the target language. After first grade, students need proficiency in the target language to keep up with classroom instruction. As a result, most families who move into the Green Lake attendance area after first grade don’t have the option of attending McDonald or JSIS. Each year, 25-55 students enroll at Green Lake elementary in grades 2-5. Additionally, each year 20-55 students leave Green Lake Elementary in grades 2-5.

    Why weren’t McDonald Elementary and John Stanford International School families invited to the meeting at Green Lake?

    The meeting was open to the public, and we were happy to see several dual language families there. We didn't send notification directly to McDonald and JSIS families because we didn't want families to worry about proposed changes that won't impact their child's school assignment.

    We want to keep communities informed about potential changes that could impact their families so they can engage and provide feedback, but we also don't want folks to worry unnecessarily if their child's assignment won't be impacted.

    What is Green Lake capacity?

    Green Lake right-size capacity, or the capacity of the building as it was originally configured, is 330 K-5 students. The operational capacity (which includes portables and converted classrooms) is 387 students. With growing enrollment in the region many schools are enrolled above the right-size capacity and it isn’t a realistic target for Green Lake.

    Can Green Lake’s building be remodeled or expanded?

    Capital Planning has been exploring options to increase Green Lake’s physical capacity, but capital improvements are long-term projects that include securing funding (potentially through the legislature or a levy), planning and design, and then construction. A large capital project takes years.

    What schools in the region have planned expansions or additions?

    The Building Excellence V (BEX V) Capital Levy includes four capital projects in North Seattle. West Woodland has an expansion scheduled to open in 2021-22 that will replace portables the school is currently using. Viewlands and Northgate elementary schools are scheduled for replacement with the new buildings due to open in 2023. Funding to develop a design for Sacajawea Elementary is part of BEX V. Construction at Sacajawea will depend on approval of the next BEX capital levy in 2025.

    Enrollment Planning and Capital Planning are working together to identify available capacity in the region, including future capacity. Schools getting building replacements or expansions may or may not be appropriate for boundary changes because of long-term enrollment projections, program placement, geography, timing, and other factors.

    If there is a boundary change can my student stay at Green Lake?

    Grandfathering, or maintaining the assignments of currently enrolled students after a boundary change, is decided by the School Board. In the past, the School Board has approved grandfathering except when opening new schools.

    If there is a boundary change, what other schools might be involved?

    Enrollment in North Seattle has been growing, and there are few schools nearby with capacity for more students. We may need to use a cascading boundary change (a change in which more than two schools are impacted) to relieve enrollment at Green Lake.

    We don’t yet know which schools will be impacted. Over the winter and spring, Enrollment Planning will develop multiple boundary change options and begin engagement with potentially impacted communities. In Fall 2020, community meetings will be held with potentially impacted school communities to gather feedback help identify a recommended scenario that will go to the School Board in Winter 2020. All boundary changes are decided by the School Board.

    Can Seattle Public Schools purchase the Fairview building now that Fairview Christian School has closed?

    We’ve received this suggestion from several parents. The Capital Planning department has investigated, but the Fairview building is currently in use as a child care center and not for sale at this time.
