    Boundary Changes for 2021-22 School Year

    Mercer International Middle School

    On Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021, the Seattle School Board approved changes to the attendance area boundaries for Mercer International Middle School, beginning with the 2021-22 school year.

    The approved scenario changes the Mercer attendance area boundary so that the Kimball elementary feeder area attends Washington Middle School and the Hawthorne elementary feeder area attends Aki Kurose Middle School. Read more about the Mercer attendance area changes.

    Rising Star Elementary and Wing Luke Elementary

    In November 2019, the School Board approved changes to the attendance area boundaries for Rising Star Elementary and Wing Luke Elementary that will be implemented beginning with the 2021-22 school year. Read more about the SE Seattle attendance area changes.


    Why and How Are School Boundaries Changed?

    Sometimes changes to school attendance area boundaries* are needed to balance student enrollment**. They are necessary because of growth in the number of students enrolled in Seattle Public Schools. The district is also growing the space available for students by building new or replacement schools, modernizing and opening closed buildings, and constructing additions at some schools.

    Boundary changes made for 2020-21

    Boundary changes were made to Maple Elementary and Dearborn Park International Elementary attendance areas beginning with the 2020-21 school year.

    Community engagement

    When the district is working on boundary changes, we hold community meetings to connect with families. Typically, these meetings begin in the spring a year prior to a boundary change.

    Families are notified about these meetings via the School Messenger email system and through each school's communication channels. Please ensure your school has the correct email address for your family in order to receive these notices. We also post meeting notices on the district website, and the meetings are added to the district calendar.


    *An attendance area school is the school to which students in elementary, middle and high-school are assigned, based on where they live. You can look up the attendance area schools for your address using the Address Lookup Tool. 

    ** student enrollment is the number of students enrolled in a particular school or in the entire district.
