Private, Charter, Homeschool and Transfer Students

Summer Eligibility Options for Incoming Students

A new-to-Seattle family has options regarding transferring into SPS and accessing Advanced Learning services. (This includes students registered for the new school year coming from private schools).

If your student is registering as a new SPS student for the 2022-23 school year, or entered SPS after January 2022, but has not participated in a public school highly capable or gifted program.

Please take a moment to read the following information to have your student considered for the Summer Eligibility Process.

Option 1

If your student is transferring from another public school highly capable or gifted program, you may submit documentation for evaluation. 

The Multidisciplinary Selection Committee (MSC) will review the documentation and make a determination regarding eligibility for Advanced Learning or Highly Capable services.

Documentation should consist of:

  • Proof of enrollment in a public school highly capable or gifted program
  • The results of testing used to place the student in the program
  • Most current achievement (math and reading) scores

Transfer Request for students with a pre-existing HC or Gifted eligibility

Option 2

If your student is registering as a new SPS student for the 2022-23 school year, or entered SPS after January 2022, but has not participated in a public school highly capable or gifted program.

  • Your student will be included in the 2022 summer eligibility process
  • Application is available April-May, 2022
  • Decisions are made and families are notified June-August, 2022

Important Dates for Summer Eligibility Process

Summer Eligibility Process starts on April 15 and continues through June 17, 2022

  • Family/Guardian Form due by Tuesday, May 31, 2022. Window will close for Summer Eligibility consideration. 
  • Summer Cycle Teacher/School Leader input due by Friday, June 17, 2022
  • Teacher input form due by Friday, June 17, 2022
  • At least two (2) supporting documents due by Friday, June 17, 2022. Submit supporting documents to AdvLearn2@seattleschools.org upon completing your Family Form.
  • Multidisciplinary Selection Committee makes eligibility decisions June 20 – August 10, 2022
  • Eligibility decisions can be expected by Friday, August 12, 2022 to the email provided in the family form.

Programs and Services

Highly Capable Services , which serves students in grades K-12, provides one or more of the following: enhanced curricula, appropriately differentiated instruction, deeper learning opportunities and/ or accelerated pacing.

Advanced Learning Programs , which serves students in grades 1-8, provides advanced curriculum in reading/ELA and math.
