A Welcome Message from Superintendent Juneau

I am honored and excited to be the incoming superintendent of Seattle Public Schools, the largest school district in Washington state. I look forward to working with students, families, staff, the Seattle School Board and community to fulfill the district’s vision – that every student receives a high-quality, 21st century education and graduates prepared for college, career and life.

A thriving public education system is the foundation of a healthy community and access to high-quality teaching and learning is every student’s right. I have worked in public education for most of my career, from being a classroom teacher to serving as the superintendent of public instruction for the state of Montana.

I know the transformational power of a great education and have seen the positive difference it makes for individuals, families and communities.

The 2017-18 District Scorecard, School Reports and Climate Survey data reflect the district’s strong gains toward achieving its vision. Graduation rates are increasing, specifically for students of color; Seattle continues to academically outperform the other districts in the state and similar districts nationally; and family satisfaction is on the rise. Yet, across our nation and here in Seattle there are persistent opportunity gaps that demonstrate the promise of a quality education remains unfulfilled for some students.

I am deeply committed to ensuring each Seattle student graduates college, career and community ready. We know that each student has unique strengths, hopes and challenges, so it is our responsibility to deliver what each student needs to be successful. I want to build on the strengths of the district and implement the most powerful strategies to address challenges and barriers to student achievement.

The success of our students requires the support and involvement of our broader community. I want to learn what is working for our students and where there are areas for growth. I also want to learn how we can improve the district’s systems, increase funding, better prepare and support our educators and more authentically engage our families and community.

During the next few months, I look forward to listening and learning from you. I truly believe that together, Seattle Public Schools can be the best public education system in the nation – providing every student the education and future they deserve.
