    Initiatives

    • Engaging Families and Community Partners: We know that students are most successful when they have support which is aligned across school, community, and home. We are working on several strategies to improve our engagement practices with families and strengthen our work with community-based organizations.
    • Supporting Teachers: Teachers are the linchpin of our work to ensure students are successful readers by the end of 3rd grade. We are supporting K-3 teachers with a range of targeted professional development opportunities.
    • Data and Collaboration: We are an organization committed to continuously improving on behalf of students. We are working to strengthen the quality of student data available for teachers to use in collaboration and improvement cycles with their colleagues.
    • Access to Preschool: Preparing students to be successful readers by the end of 3rd grade starts in preschool. We are developing plans to expand access to high-quality and equitable preschool opportunities within Seattle Public Schools.

    Engagement

    • June 2019, Seattle Super Readers campaign launched with schools and community partners around the city, including Seattle Public Libraries. Seattle Super Readers is a key part of our family and community engagement strategy to make reading exciting and joyful for our youngest scholars. Read more about Seattle Super Readers.
    • May 2019, Early Literacy Community Work Group formed. Made up of partners from across the community and SPS staff working on the 3rd grade reading goal, the group will meet regularly throughout the 2019-20 school year to inform this work.
    • October 2019, Fall Partner Kickoff to share the district's strategic plan and the initiatives under the 3rd grade goal with our community partners. The kickoff event welcomed 142 people who represented 82 community organizations. During the kickoff, we collected feedback and discussed key issues such as alignment across home, school, and community, and centering Black Excellence within our curriculum and teaching and learning practices.
