    District VII (7) Appointment Criteria and Process

    Applicants must also be U.S. citizens and registered voters. For more information, read the Candidate Manual published on the King County Elections website.

    The duties for School Board members are defined by Washington state law, RCW 28A.150.230, and RCW section 28A.330. Visit the Washington State Legislature website to read the school director legislative law sections. 

    Appointment process timeline:

    • June 28: Deadline to send letter of interest and work experience deadline for interested candidates. This information is publicly displayed on the individual candidate pages linked below.
    • July 15: School Board holds a public special meeting (Work Session) on the School Board District VII Appointment Process from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in the Board Office Conference Room at the John Stanford Center.
    • July 29: Completed candidate questionnaires due by Monday, July 29, 2019 at 9 a.m. to boardoffice@seattleschools.org. Extensions were provided for questionnaire responses submission and revisions. Final deadline to send content was August 1, 5 p.m.
    • July 30: Answers to the individual questionnaires are displayed on individual candidate pages. Final content was published August 2.
    • August 5: School Board holds a public special meeting (Work Session) on the School Board District VII Appointment Process from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in the Board Office Conference Room at the John Stanford Center. During this meeting, it is anticipated that the Board will select questions for the August 7 forum.
    • August 7: Public Candidate District VII Forum at the Rainier Beach High School Performing Arts Center from 6 - 9 p.m. Each applicant will have a set time to share why they want to serve Seattle Public Schools and present their qualifications. Ron Sims, former deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and former King County executive, will moderate the forum.
    • August 12: School Board public special meeting (Work Session) on the School Board District VII Appointment Process from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Board Office Conference Room at the John Stanford Center. During this meeting, the Board will plan for upcoming appointment process meetings.
    • August 21: Public special board meeting to select the three finalist candidates from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the John Stanford Center.
    • September 11: Public District VII Candidate Forum at the Rainier Beach High School Performing Arts Center from 6 - 9 p.m. During this forum, the three finalists will be invited to answer questions from the community.
    • September 18: School Board vote on the applicants during the Regular School Board meeting, which begins at 4:15 p.m. at the John Stanford Center auditorium. The applicant that is selected will be sworn in during the Regular Board meeting.
