    Early Entrance to Kindergarten (EEK)

According to Washington state school attendance rules, a child must be five years old by August 31 to attend kindergarten. Seattle Public Schools offers the opportunity for parents of students who demonstrate observable, significantly advanced levels of social and cognitive readiness to apply for an exception.

Students whose fifth birthday occurs between Sept. 1 and Oct. 31 may apply to be evaluated for approval for Early Entrance to Kindergarten. Students approved for EEK may register in June to attend a one-month trial in kindergarten in September.

How should I decide whether to apply?

Families with students whose birthdays fall between September 1 and October 31 have a difficult decision to make. They must decide whether their child is sufficiently advanced to enter kindergarten early, or wait until the next school year. Simply put, the early-entrance child is always going to be one of the youngest students in their classroom through graduation.

Eligibility for early entrance to kindergarten will be based on a child's readiness. The process involves an objective evaluation of your child’s beginning social maturity, physical coordination, language development, and academic skills.

    Deciding for Your Student
