    Hazardous Snow or Ice Conditions Occurring During Non-school Hours

    Procedure

    At approximately 2:00 a.m., designated school district transportation staff drive the roads to provide real time feedback and observation used to assess safe driving conditions. Recommendations for delays and closures are based on road on arterial road conditions (major and minor), noting specific challenging areas and existing and anticipated weather patterns.   

    Between 4:00 – 4:30 a.m., the Logistics Director or their designee will communicate observations and recommendations to the Assistant Superintendent of Operations. The Assistant Superintendent of Operations and the Superintendent will then render a final decision for that day’s operations. The targeted time for decisions regarding school delays or closures is by 5:00 a.m.

    Notification

    If inclement weather makes a schedule change necessary, the Seattle Public Schools Communication Office notifies families via the automated School Messenger system, places a notice on the district’s and school websites and alerts the media.
