The 2016-17 Family Survey contained questions about families’ influence in school-level decision-making, school educational quality, and school climate. It also asked families about their satisfaction with the district office. All results are available on the R&E survey webpage.

A highlight from the findings is that all nine items about the district central office showed improvements over the 2016 results. Three items with the largest gains are shown below.

All nine items about the district central office showed improvements over the 2016 results.

Additionally, the Family Survey contained one write-in question: Please provide any feedback to help us improve your child's school or the district as a whole. Families provided nearly 5,000 responses, which we then systematically coded and analyzed by issue raised. The most frequently cited issue was that families would like improved communication between teachers/school leaders and families, for example by regularly updating online communication systems (e.g. The Source, Schoology), holding more parent-teacher conferences, and giving more homework so parents better understand what their children are learning.

    Families also want:

    • Balance of rigorous academics and social emotional learning
    • Advanced learning/acceleration opportunities for students
    • Equity of opportunity for all students
    • Less disruption and more choice in enrollment
    • Longer lunches/recess
    • Consistent, reasonable bell times
    • Locked entryways for improved school safety
    • Smaller class sizes/increased resources and funding
    • Less politics in the schools

All Family Survey responses have been shared with district leadership. Findings from the 2018 Family Survey will be made public on the Panorama reporting portal by August 31, 2018. For more information about our Family Survey results, visit the R&E surveys page. A summary deck of the 2016-17 open-ended response data is forthcoming.
