    Educational Research and Program Evaluation

    R&E's annual research agenda includes several types of projects, including mixed-methods program evaluations of select district programs and services; strategic action research to support planning and decision-making aligned to district priority goals; and research-practice partnerships with higher education to improve practice aligned to district goals. 

    All research projects are conducted in accordance with School Board Policy 2090, which sets forth the requirement that Seattle Public Schools evaluate educational programs and services. The primary goals of the program review process are to:

    • Provide a rigorous, systematic process for evaluating programs and services
    • Produce actionable formative data to improve programs and services provided
    • Improve decision-making by deepening understanding of program design, implementation, results/outcomes, and cost/benefits

    2019-20

    The Board-approved 2019-20 Work Plan included multiple program evaluations, action research studies and research-practice partnerships, covering a broad range of topics and programs. The summative reports were delivered to the School Board in November, 2020. Please note that some of the projects below are multi-year in scope.

    Curriculum Evaluation Reports

    Below are year-end reports related to various curriculum implementation studies underway in Seattle Public Schools. These reports are conducted in partnership with the Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction (CAI) Department and focus on the district-wide implementation of instructional materials in English Language Arts, math, and science.
