Carol M. White, Phyiscal Education for Progress (PEP)
Our school district has received an incredible and rare opportunity for the Physical Education Program: a Carol M. White PEP Grant from the Federal Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools. This grant’s funding is focused on reorganizing our Physical Education program to be aligned with state standards. The funding offered through the three year grant is used to provide curriculum, software, equipment, staff training and program infrastructure development. This reorganization will help prepare our students to lead active and healthy lives. To meet this goal, there will be an emphasis on helping students increase their health and fitness knowledge and form healthy habits. The PEP grant will provide the resources to develop a quality, standards-based program which could not be accomplished through district resources alone. With all good things come increased responsibilities. The grant requirements include data collection tools as part of the required evaluation for the Carol M. White PEP grant. The purpose of this evaluation is to examine program implementation, partnerships, data use, and student outcomes associated with PEP grant project. Results from the data will provide feedback to both the Department of Education and our district. These results will be used to improve our project implementation and to inform future improvements to the Carol M. White PEP grant program.

The program goals will be accomplished by:
- A K-12 articulated written curriculum aligned with state standards (i.e. nutrition, goal setting, five components of fitness)
- Progressive physical fitness skills articulated from K-12
- Fitness measurements are used to track students’ fitness
- Implementation of personal fitness plans at middle and high school
Fundamental Movement Skills
- Developmentally appropriate progressive motor skills K-12
- Team, individual and lifetime activities that build the habit of an active lifestyle
- Social Well-being o Improving social relationships, and emotional well-being through active engagement in physical activity
The educational community will support student learning by providing:
- Community and parents modeling healthy physical and nutritional behaviors
- School board members, administrators, classroom teachers, nutritional services, counselors, nurses, and social services supporting coordinated school wide involvement in improving students’ fitness and health
- Maintaining clean, safe and adequate equipment and facilities for all students.
- All students the opportunity to reach our Physical Education program goals by not allowing compromised scheduling, substitutions, or inadequate time.
The overall purpose of the physical education program is to create an exemplary program that sets the benchmark for excellence in physical education.
