In September 2018, Seattle Public Schools initiated an adoption process for instructional materials to support science in grades 9 through 12. An Adoption Committee, which included teachers, parents, students, and community members, was formed to begin the process of reviewing instructional materials.

The instructional materials process followed Seattle Public Schools Selection and Adoption of Instructional Materials Policy No. 2015.

In June of 2019, the School Board approved the committee’s recommendation to extended development of the district-developed curriculum for Chemistry B (CHEM B) for an additional year. The Adoption Committee will reconvene in March of 2020 to review the curriculum again and to deliberate on potential recommendations to the School Board.

If recommended by the committee and approved by the Seattle School Board, the new instructional materials would be ready for implementation by the 2020-21 school year.

    Adoption Committee Information

The Adoption Committee, first convened in October of 2018, includes principals, teachers, families, students, and community members who provide valuable insight and perspective regarding the instructional materials provided for review. The parents and community members on the committee have been asked to bring an open mind and a passion about innovative student learning in science. They are also willing to engage in inquiry, meaningful dialogue, and collaboration throughout the adoption process.

Community Open Houses on CHEM B

To help inform the work of the adoption committee, SPS families and teachers will be invited to attend Open Houses to examine the district-developed curriculum, ask questions of those involved in the development process, and to provide feedback and input to the Adoption Committee.
