Curriculum Adoption

2019 Since Time Immemorial: Tribal Sovereignty

Since Time Immemorial Curriculum Adopted June 2019

on June 26, 2019, the Seattle School Board voted to adopt Since Time Immemorial: Tribal Sovereignty in Washington State.

The adoption of Since Time Immemorial (STI) provides all Seattle Public Schools students with an education on the background and current affairs of the 29 sovereign nations within the boundaries of Washington state.

The use of Since Time Immemorial is supported by state law, RCW 28.320.70 Tribal History and Culture, and helps the district formally address the omission of information that has shaped and influences many aspects of our collective community life. Seattle Public Schools is committed to racial equity, as well as inclusive and accurate teaching and learning in our classrooms.

Due to a long history of institutional racism in education, the accomplishments, affairs, and contemporary experience of the First Peoples of Washington state has been consistently omitted from public school curricula and/or portrayed inaccurately.
