IN PRAISE OF JACOB MILLER, CLASS OF 2009: For His Service to Westside as a Web Design Instructor, February - June 2008. (Tonkin)
Many of you know and love Jacob Miller, Class of 2009. For those of you who don't know him, Jake is humble, hardworking, incredibly bright and very talented with digital technology, and is commonly referred to as Westside's Web Master". Jake founded his own Print & Design business in 2007, DampFlame Designs, and has designed websites for the Seattle Times and Reeltime, as well as dozens of other private clients, the list grows more impressive by the month. Jake has acted as both a judge and a contestant in DECA competitions, and is a gem to work with in any capacity, as he is extremely professional, mature and friendly. I hope all of you will get the chance to work with Jake before he graduates next year.

Jake taught Web Design in Codling's absence. Jake volunteered to teach Codling's Web Design class in February when Codling hadn't yet returned. While Codling's substitute, Maurice Regnier, has worked extremely hard keeping things afloat in Mr. C's absence, Mr. Regnier admittedly does not have a background in Web Design, so he has provided structure for the class, and networked for community connections for the students, while Jacob has taught all the technology basics. Jake created a curriculum and lesson plans for Web Design, and by the second week in to the class, there was a waiting list of 7 people (or so I heard). Pretty good for a class with a teacher out on leave. Once kids heard Jake was teaching, they flooded to sign up! The lucky students who got into the class have now acquired industry-level skills worth $45-$60, thanks to Jacob, as he taught CSS in combination with the Macromedia Suite (Dreamweaver, Flash, etc.). These are serious life/job skills to pass onto teenagers. YAAAY JAKE!!!
Please give Jake props when you see him. He really has given a gift to these other students, and to our schools, through his generosity and vision!
On behalf of the students and staff at Westside….THANK YOU SO MUCH JAKE!
