West Seattle High School Senior Pictures – Due Oct 22nd 2009
Requirements for Yearbook Senior Pictures:

• Vertical orientation
• Head and shoulders shot. 
• At least 300 dpi
• Digital or print copies accepted (digital preferred)
• No full body, no props.
• Head size from top of head to chin: 1 inch minimum
• Color photos, please.  No Black and White or Sepia.
• Plain backgrounds of a neutral color preferred.  Outdoor shots are permitted, as long as the background is neutral and not distracting.  Great choices for neutral outdoor backgrounds:  bricks, sky, water, sand, foliage, walls.  Poor choices for outdoor backgrounds:  graffiti, a city-scape, flowering bushes, cars, anything multi-colored.  The most noticeable thing in your picture should be you, not the giant rhododendron over your shoulder. J

Special Note:  The following pictures will not be accepted.

• Pictures that have been photoshopped (ie, your head on someone else’s body.)
• Photos with other people or pets in them
• Photos of you in any kind of costume or make-up that you do not normally wear (ie,  clown make-up, fake bruises, vampire teeth).
• Full body pictures
• Photos with dark shadows (these do not print well in the yearbook.)

Greetings West Seattle High School Families,

I want to remind you of our Resource Fair and Curriculum Night on Thursday, October 8th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at West Seattle High School. This is an opportunity for all parents, guardians and family members to come to the school, visit with their student’s teachers, learn about class goals and class expectations, and how they can best partner support their student’s academic success. We are offering a Resource Fair from 5:30pm to 6:30pm that will include all of our school partners and support services. From 6:30pm to 8:30pm, we will have our Curriculum Night, where you will meet the entire school staff, and then proceed to visit all of the classes on your students’ schedule. All West Seattle High School students were asked to complete a schedule today in their homeroom class on the Curriculum Night flier that identified their teacher’s name, room number, and class title. If you have not received it yet, then please ask your son or daughter to provide it prior to tomorrow evening. If you have any questions, then please contact the school at (206) 252-8800. The PSAT test will be given to all 10th and 11th graders on Oct.14th with the following schedule:

• All 10th and 11th graders will take the PSAT on October 14 from 8:15am to 11:15am. Student will find their assigned rooms posted by the main office.
• All 9th graders will be required to attend an alternative program with 9th grade teachers and the 9th grade intervention team (HS Academic Achievement Program, also known as RFI) from 8:15am – 11:15am. 
• All 12th graders will have a ‘late-arrival’ and start school at 11:15am (lunch time).
•  run a ‘straight-six’ schedule for the entire week from October 12 – 16 due to the PSAT on Wednesday, October 14th
• And we run the following schedule for October 14th.

Good Evening West Seattle High School Families. This is Principal Bivins and I want to pass along to you a few calendar updates.

Attention ALL Incoming 9th Graders:
Summer Bridge 2009 is almost here!

All incoming 9th grade students at West Seattle High School are expected to attend Summer Bridge. There are two days in June (check the chart below for your assigned days) and five days in August.

During Summer Bridge you will tour your new school, meet WSHS teachers, participate in academic workshops, learn leadership skills, earn your first community service hours, and try out enrichment activities. In June, you will receive a summer reading book and a math packet to be completed over the summer to help prepare you for your high school core classes.

Lunch will be provided as well as WSHS incentives like class t-shirts, binders and sports bags. Bus tokens will be available upon request.

Summer Bridge Dates
Students attend only on the day listed according to their last name on these dates.

Making the Transition to High School
The transition to high school can present students with academic and social challenges, so we will be working to provide students with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed in a rigorous high school environment as well as working with our students to build a community of learners that support each other throughout the school year.

Our Community Partners
We are partnering a youth global leadership organization called One World Now to help our students explore their readiness to enter high school. Because incoming freshmen have many fears and expectations about the high school experience, we find that taking time to explore these lays a foundation for a safe, inclusive learning space. One World Now will offer a series of fun, fast-paced activities with each activity moving deeper into an understanding self and others.

Other community partners include the YMCA and Arts Corps. Students will get the opportunity to sample the enrichment programs they offer at WSHS to help them decide if they’d like to participate in them during the upcoming school year.

Here are the events planned:

Monday: “5 minute resumes” – as well as job postings and job application help. Lunch, Room 212

Tuesday: “Training for the Trades” – panel on different trade career training options. Tentative speakers: Bright Futures (SVI), JobCorps, Construction Industry Training Council, and Apprenticeship Opportunities Project. Pizza Lunch, Room 212, students must sign-up

Wednesday: “How to make some GREEN: Careers that pay” – Seattle Jobs Initiative speakers on growth industries and green jobs. Pizza Lunch, Room 212, students must sign-up

Thursday: “On-the-spot Mini-Interviews!” – Set-up in Lunchroom. Students get prizes for answering common interview questions!

Friday: “Mock Interviews” – Students sign-up for a time to have a practice interview with a volunteer staff member. This is a GREAT opportunity to practice interview skills and get feedback with a friendly staff member who wants to see students succeed in the job market!

I have lots of students signed up for the Tuesday and Wednesday events – but very few signed-up for Friday’s mock interviews! Please encourage students to take advantage of this opportunity!


TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO GET YOUR GRAD NIGHT PARTY TICKET!

Don't let your senior miss this safe, drug free, alcohol free, fun night of dinner, dancing, black jack, hypnotist, video games, and more. The party starts at 10:00 p.m the night of graduation, June 11, and goes until 6:00 a.m. the following morning. Sign-up sheets are available in the rounder outside Mr. Burr's office at the school.

Committee Chair People: Ticket Sales/Permission Slips--Sandy Watkins; Casino Committee--Jon Dawson; Prize Committee--Teresa Morgan-Quintero; Food & Refreshment Committee--Connie Reed, Cheryl McDonald and Susan Bess; Chaperone Committee -- open. Please let us know if you would like to help on any of these committees.

We will be providing breakfast for the kids the following morning. If you would like to contribute to this breakfast by donating muffins, cereal, juice, water, etc., or cash, please let us know.

We are also still looking for casino dealers the night of the event (11:00 pm to 1:30 am). If you are not interested in being a dealer, we could use more people on any of the above committees. We could also use a few more people to help check students in at the school at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 11 -- this would last approximately one hour.

UPDATE for WSHS Families

Dear Families,

We are happy to announce that you will soon be receiving automated telephone calls regarding unexcused absences and tardies. Beginning June 1st, calls will be made centrally by the Seattle School District to students in grades 6-12 at schools that take period attendance.

If your student receives an unexcused absence or tardy you will receive an automated phone call about the absence or the tardy that evening. Calls will begin at 6:00 PM each weeknight in order to ensure that the highest number of families are at home when calls are made by the system.

To provide the most specific information possible to families, the District is implementing separate unexcused absence and unexcused tardy calls. This will allow calls to include information about the specific period your student received an unexcused absence or tardy. This means that if your student has an excused absence and an unexcused tardy on the same day, you will receive two separate SchoolMessenger calls.

Calls will be made to the primary phone number currently on file with the School District. Families that have provided the District with an email address will receive an email containing unexcused attendance and tardy information. Translated calls will be available in the nine languages most frequently requested language in our District.

Currently, many the secondary schools across the District have their own desktop version of SchoolMessenger for making attendance calls. Moving forward, these calls will happen centrally and these schools will no longer have the added resource commitment of purchasing their individual SchoolMessenger licenses.

"Rolling 4" wins over "Straight 6" in an all staff vote as the framework for next year's schedule.

You're invited to have a say in the specifics of the schedule. The Schedule Committee will meet Wednesday, May 27 at 2:45pm.

The schedule committee will work to determine the details: start and end time, breaks, exact length of periods, DEN time, special schedules (for early release, late start, and assembly days), etc.

Detailed schedule options will be presented to staff for a vote before the end of this school year.

Urgent Need for Volunteers for Class of 2009 Judging Senior Presentation

It's nearing the end of May already, and the class of 2009 is preparing to take flight. The last big assignment for them is the 10 minute oral presentation of their research. You have listened in the
past and given great support and guidance. I?m hoping that you may be able to help us out again.

There will be five presentation days: May 29, June 1, June 2, June 3, and June 4 . The presentations are from 3:00 to 5:00 each day. Come and sign up a friend. The latest trend in judging has been to listen with a friend or two and then go out for a nice supper afterwards. Think about it!

Beware of College Prep Businesses that Charge a Fee for Services

Numerous businesses are sprouting up that charge significant fees for college, financial aid, and scholarship information and services that is often available for free. "Edifi" and "College Admissions Assistance” are names of two of these companies, but there are sure to be more. One tactic is to offer a free seminar and interview, after which consultants give parents a high-pressure sales pitch, demanding an on-the-spot payment of $2000 with no time to think about it. Consultants are reported to try to convince parents that they are harming their child’s future (in front of the child) if they don’t buy these services. These companies often target families of ninth graders.

High school Career Centers and college Financial Aid offices offer a wealth of FREE college financial information. There are many websites and agencies that also offer FREE information such as

Student Clothing Policy Reminder Spring '09 - Show some CLASS!

No matter how HOT is gets, we do not allow bare midriffs, excessive cleavage or athletic shirts with the arm holes cut out, etc. No bikinis or swimsuits are allowed!

-- Also -- bra straps can not be visible! (Wear a cardigan with those spaghetti straps or halter top.)

-- We will be using the fingertip method to determine if your skirt/shorts are long enough -- the hem must be AS LONG as your fingertips when you are standing.

-- Shoes or sandals must be worn at all time -- that's a no brainer!

-- Students violating the spring dress code will be asked to change their clothes, wear a beautiful, all-yellow shirt, or a parent will be notified that you will need to go home (which may results in an unexcused absence)!!!

So keep Westside cool and follow the rule!

100 Year Logo Contest for WSHS

The West Seattle High School Alumni Association is seeking a special logo commemorating 100 years of WSHS graduates, which will be imprinted on tee shirts, water bottles, and possibly mugs and key rings (to be determined). Contest is open to any former and current students of WSHS.

To be considered, the logo entries should be limited to 3 colors: blue and gold with white OR black contrast, no reference to any mascot (no Indians or Wildcats), and should include references to 100 years, 1910-2010, or the word centennial. Entries must be submitted on 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper.

Deadlines for submission: June 1, 2009 for current students, Oct 1, 2009 for alumni. The winner will be awarded a modest prize (also to be determined), aside from the honor of being selected. Any questions, please contact me. Thank You!

Attendance Policy & Data -- Update from Principal Bruce Bivins

Westside Families,

Effective Monday, February 23rd, 2009

In an effort to:

* streamline the process of students being assigned After-School School or Saturday School

* reduce the amount of time students are out of class after they arrive late to school/class

* reduce the number of classroom interruptions with requests to report

Procedural Steps 1-9:

1. Teachers continue to meet students at the door the last 60 seconds of passing period (when the music stops), and lock doors at the bell.

2. Students that are late to class go directly to the Attendance Office.

3. Attendance Office will provide an unexcused tardy slip for students arriving within 10 minutes of the beginning of class, and an unexcused absent slip for students arriving after the 10 minute mark, with time indicated and stapled to an assigned After-School School slip.

4. Student will report to class with this slip, and are expected to arrive to class within 5 minutes of receiving their slip from the Attendance Office (check the time stamp for verification).

5. Teacher will mark them unexcused tardy or unexcused absent accordingly.

6. Students will be responsible to attend After-School School on one of the 3 days offered for the week. (Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 2:35pm to 3:15pm).

7. Students that do NOT complete their After-School School time will be required to attend Saturday School from 9:00am to Noon in the Library.

8. Students that do NOT complete Saturday School will be assigned counselor intervention.

9. If the student misses 2 or more Saturday Schools, then they will be assigned administrative intervention, which may result in disciplinary action with parent involvement

So...the one VERY notable change to the policy is around the 1st offense Warning to students with an intervention meeting - please voice to our students that now after 3 months of an effective school-wide Attendance Policy, with results hovering around 90% improvement in student tardies, that ALL STUDENTS have been officially warned and educated of the consequences for being unexcused late or absent to class, and will NOW be assigned After-School School for any unexcused tardy or absence that occurs, effective Monday, February 23, 2009. All students will have to clear their unexcused tardy or absent, through an excused NOTE signed by a parent/guardian within 48 hours, or they will have to complete their After-School School that same week as the infraction.

Please review the following policy particulars to re-visit and reinforce with our students:

Attendance Policy:

* The expectation is for every student to be to class on time

* ALL classroom doors are locked at the tardy bell

* All students must get their absences/tardies excused within 48 hours - 2 school days

* Student will need a pass from the Attendance Office to enter class after the tardy bell

* No hall passes will be issued during the first 10 minutes and last 10 minutes of class

* Use the "Orange Pass" or teacher approved pass as the Hall Pass for staff excused purposes to be out of the classroom

* TA's wear your TA Badges, they must be visible from a distance in the halls

* Video, ASB, Yearbook, Journalism, and Leadership class students wear your badges, they must be visible from a distance when outside of the classroom during project work.

Quarterly Grades Update

At WSHS, Quarter grades are no longer "final grades" (and are not recorded as permanent grades on a student's transcript). They are now "interim grades" and are similar to progress reports in value.
Quarter/Interim grades are generally averaged (1st and 2nd quarter of each semester) to form the final semester grade (the teacher determines the final grade). It is only the final semester grade that
is entered on a student's transcript.

NOTE: This is the same system used by other comprehensive high schools in the Seattle School District.

WSHS Auto Club Seeks Donation of Car Trailer and Tow Vehicle

In order to go get unrunning vehicles, whether student projects or donations, the West Seattle High School Auto Club is looking for a car trailer and tow vehicle. They need not be donated together. Neither need be particularly new or in perfect condition. We can do work to fix them up. The trailer should be a tandem axle trailer with brakes capable of handling larger American cars. It should be a regular trailer-hitch type, not a fifth-wheel type. The tow vehicle should be a larger pick-up, van, or SUV with heavy duty suspension for towing.
